Selfish, narcissistic, liar, gaslighter, tyrant, slave beater, erotomaniac, jealous, heartless. If only this despicable character had not ensnared one man into marriage, it would have spared us the unnecessary long final arc of this already very long story.
I wondered, after watching the movie, why would the left-leaning Hollywood adapt such a story from a southerner point of view (entertaining quite a nostalgia of the old South and the so-called Lost Cause). How foolish was I not to remember that 1939 was only 24 years after the release of Birth of a Nation and that such a narrative was still extremely popular back in the day, even in Northern states.
At any rate, the cinematography in this is still relatively impressive 87 years later, and must have been a truly spectacular sight back at the time. A undeniable technical prowess helping going through this long epic that, when viewed in 2026, requires trading a sense of involvement in the story, with a thirst for witnessing and understanding a deeply interesting cultural artifact.
